Shane Investing in a candler Even if your hatching just a few eggs a candler is a good idea then from day 7 right up to hatch you can check to see how things are developing although this does not prevent losses for many different reasons..humidity etc but it does give you a better idea on fertlity and you don't waste time attempting to hatch infertile eggs.

We use sandpaper sheets in our hatcher for the first few days when the chcks hatch..this can be purchased quite cheaply and makes an ideal surface for the hatchlings to find there feet on.The sandpaper soaks up any droppings keeping the brooder clean and can be disposed of easily. We buy a pack of 50 assorted sheets for only a pound and they last for ages.

If theres any Silkie fans out there and you have trouble keeping them entertained..ensure you give them a dust bath with playpit childs sand and a millet spray..ideally hung from the pen..These will help keep them active as they need regular stimulation and activity..Silkies are great characters and will follow you around the garden like a dog.

At this time of year wild bird food is very good for chooks especially if they are or are coming up to moult feed it as a treat a few times week and allow them to scratch around in the soil for it, this will keep them entertained and is great fun to watch especially if the find a worm.
